# How seats work

> Plain bills for member seats, which can reply to customers, and includes unlimited free viewer seats on every plan.

Plain has 2 types of seat: member seats and viewer seats. You pay for member seats, which let users reply to customers. Viewer seats are free and unlimited on every [plan](/docs/product/billing/pricing).

## Member seats

Member seats are for the users who reply to customers. Your plan sets the [price of each member seat and how many you can have](/docs/product/billing/pricing#prices-and-included-credits).

A user with the Owner, Admin, or Support role uses a member seat.

## Viewer seats

Viewer seats are for users who need customer context but don't reply to customers, such as people in product and engineering. A user with the Viewer role uses a viewer seat.

Viewers can read threads and customer context across your workspace, but they can't:

* Reply to customers
* Create a [broadcast](/docs/product/broadcasts) or change a broadcast's [target](/docs/product/broadcasts/targets)
* Assign a thread to themselves by [reacting to it in Slack](/docs/product/channels/slack-in-slack-actions)

Viewers can use [Sidekick](/docs/product/agents/sidekick) by default. A workspace Admin or Owner can turn off Sidekick access for Viewers in **Sidekick → Settings**. A viewer seat is free, but Sidekick sessions started by a Viewer use [credits](/docs/product/billing/credits#variable-actions) from your workspace's allowance, the same as any other session.
